Hi,

I live in Canberra and my son found an egg we are hoping someone might be able to help us indentify.

It is slightly larger than a quail egg and a similar colour with speckles on it.

Any ideas??

Where did you find it?
Is it the spotted one in the foreground with quail eggs in the background for comparison?

That's a blackbird egg.

Definitely a Blackbird egg.

The one in my garden has just hatched 2 chicks.

The hen comes out in the evening when I am watering the vegetable garden for a shower and to dig up the wet garden.

Where did you find the egg?

Canary - it was under a bush in the front yard. I looked for a nest but couldn't see any close by. Should I leave it in with the quail eggs?

I would be checking around the bushes in the front yard to see if you can find a nest. The hen will usually enter the garden about 5m from where the enst is in my back garden.

I will be surprised if you don't find one.

One fledged Blackbird chick flying around my backyard this afternoon calling for the parents. No sign of a second chick.

I only know that there were 2 chicks hatched by the egg shells that the hen left near the vegetable garden around the 19th December. So that would make the chick approx 29 days old.

They nest each year in the same spot under a Cycad at the back of my swimming pool. .It is dense garden and no one goes anywhere near the nest. One year they nested in a flower pot at the front of my house and hatched the chicks, but I think one of the neighbours cats got the chicks before I got the cat.

You can see the hen in the photo below (small black dot) in front of the palm tree trunk, just to the right of the chimney. I took this photo about 1 week ago.
