Hi all

With the temp much hotter than last week I was completely caught off guard.

There was something about today apart form the higher temp that made it so potent.

I lost my TCPF hen, Red Siskin Hen and maybe a green singer hen.

My best canary is is struggling in the heat though being the champ she is she still keeps trying to go back to her eggs(expecting some nice mules)...would be safe to say they are hard boiled now though...........

Running the hose on mist in there until night fall now as even when I soak the walls and floor it drys within 2 mins and is steaming hot again.

 Not too bothered about the cost of the birds but the tcpf, siskin and singer were the first birds I go into after the simple stuff and I got quite attached to em.....thats keeping birds for ya I guess...heat, rats, worms and other diseases all claim birds at some stage or another.

Big lessons learnt to factor into my next aviary built.....

Hope everyone else did ok today

Having the same problem here in Leichhardt where the temp is currently 46c as I type this. Just went and changed the water and all birds are on the ground in the shade. No losses at this stage (fingers crossed). Sorry to hear about your loss. Bring on autumn!

Sorry to hear about your loss. Here in perth we have had a couple of days relief from the heat which is nice. I am going to set a misting system up in my aviary very soon as the birds need cooling down when the temperature rises too much. Has any body ever come across a thermometer that when reaches a certain temp can activate a switch... This would be interesting to have attached to the misting system as we are all never home 24/7. Sorry agai. About your birds!

Really sorry to hear about your losses Steve.
I've tried to leave mine alone but did go and give a bit of mist spray an hour or so ago. Birds all looked to be coping but virtually all the flies in my flybox were dead. This gave me the chance to give it a good clean out without covering the neighbourhood in flies - every cloud has a silver lining!

So sorry to hear that. Our forecast here was max 39C but it hit 45C for a good couple of hours - quite a difference for bird care. Fortunately I was home so could layer wet towels on the aviary roof for a slight aircon effect. No losses.

Mine hasn't been much better...

So far, three years work, three generations of Lutino Nyassa Lovebirds, which included a colony of splits, my normals, and my coloured birds. Only Nyassa's left are one Lut cock bird, one normal hen and a couple of splits and possible splits...

Strange because my finch aviary and peach face aviary next to them, there were no loses...

The other side of my house, the Fischer colony, looking a little hot and bothered but no loses...

Thinking of giving up, I had big plans for the Nyassa's this year...

After being belted from the last heatwave we have been belted again. The thermometer in my bird room was showing 52c and
it is accurate, luckily few birds are inside. In the aviaries most birds went to ground but I guess another round of nestlings/eggs will be lost.
What worries me is that we normally have our hottest days Feb and early March.
Once again thousands of litres of water pumped in,I would hate to know my losses if that wasn't available.
