I have a newly aquired pair of Ruddies and they built a nest within a week in the new aviary. They have had two clutches of eggs which they have sat on for 12-14days and both have been infertile. Is this common with this breed ?

If there young birds takes them usually a few rounds before lay fertile eggs.

Not typical for Ruddies to have consecutive clear clutches. Capable of breeding far younger than most finches.

Ruddies are usually pretty ruddy fertile. So maybe the eggs were fertile but have been cooked on one of the recent hot days. Where is the nest located?

The nest is in tea tree brush at the back of the aviary, but temperature could be a problem we have had some weeks of 35-40c. I hadn't thought of that can this be a real problem ??

If the nest is close to or against a west facing colorbond wall then that may very likely be the problem.

Hi,

Just a pertinente question: are they real puré African fire finches??
I mean, if your pair are two African fire finchs and not other spicies in beetween.
Their are some small diferences beetween spicies and some time to cross them, results in infertile eggs and imcompatiblety beetween couples.

African fire finch = Lagonosticta rubricata
Red-billed Firefinch = Lagonosticta senegala

Has you see, they are to diferent spicies...

In Australia where there is only one type, we are a little less particular about names.
