Just wondering how many people are using , or have used , alternative herb seeds in their aviaries and are they having success whether it be thru sprouting or dry fed .
I have created a mix and I'd love to hear from you all , your thoughts on the seeds included .
The seeds in my mix are ...
Red , black and white Quinoa (pronounced kin-wah) , celery , Aniseed , Flax , hulled striped sunflower , Black and white Chia , Poppy , Sesame , Caraway , Hulled hemp , Fennel , Alfalfa , wild rice , Dill and Milo .
I feed out around 4 dry teaspoons every few days and my lot have been picking through and taking what they like .
Has anyone else dabbled with herb seeds and how did you feed it out ?

I've experimented with most of those & put the ones I use in a mix with other grass seeds. Haven't tried celery, black quinoa or hulled hemp. I found white quinoa was not eaten much at all & did I bit of research & found out it contains tannins which are a natural defence against birds eating it. These are supposed to be reduced by soaking/sprouting so it would be better offered that way. Also didn't get much enthusiasm for flax (linseed) or milo (too hard & large for most finches - quite good as a sprout though). I offer my tonic mix as a dry supplement in a jar feeder within a larger plastic pot base to breeding aviaries only. It also contains some finch crumbles & fine minerals & grits but is at least 80% seeds.
