Johnson grass

Is there a type of grass identical to Johnson (sudan) grass but on a miniature scale here in WA ?
I have the "giant" variety that stands around 9 - 10 ft tall in large pots , however I have found what looks like a smaller version on the side of the road in an agricultural area in the Southwest .
I have put it into a pot also , but , it has not grown much taller than 4 ft and has smaller seed heads and thinner leaf blades .
Funny enough my colony chooses it as preference over the large variety .
I would upload pics but I've had difficulty trying to post from my 8mp smart phone .
Any pics to help ID would be great .
Also if anyone has a pic of their own "guinea" grass (panicum maxima) I'd love to see it as I have a type of grass that I can't seem to identify ...
It has wide velvety leaf blades and deep purple seed heads similar to green panic but with double the seeds and alot more upright in its appearance and almost bamboo like .
