For those with a hint of a taste for Genetics, this is how the various shades in Head Colours can be explained.
Red Heads, Yellow Heads and Black Heads come in three different Shades of Head Colours
A light, medium and a dark shade.
A light shade in any Head Colour has inherited no dark or modifying Factor
A medium Shade in any Head Colour carries one dark or modifying Factor
A dark shade in any Head Colour carries two dark or modifying Factors
The hardest Shade in any Head Colour to come by is the light shade
I strongly suspect that this is the type of Cock Bird you are referring to, it is particularly striking in yellow heads,a pale yellow Head Colour contrasting the pale blue Head Band, I have to say
they stick out like a Daisy on a Dung Heap, simply stunning,
like him or loath him, Mike Fidler is right when he said many years ago that at the end of the day you cannot go past the normal Gouldian.
Anyone with an inquiring mind and interest in genetics can look up in the FOR SALE section on our Forum The Genetic Head Colour Inheritance of the Gouldian Finch, dig it out, and decide wether its your cup of tea or not.

So Jay, did you ask if it was for sale? Or have you put dibs in on future offspring? Sounds very appealing.

I am with you garyh,i don't believe you can class different shades of head colours as a mutation as such. For as an example, when i was taken to a location to count gouldians by one of the volunteers and our conversation began by me telling the driver that i photographed a yellow headed gouldian in a small flock the day before and it was the same colour as all i have seen in captivity.garyh wrote:Don't believe that, maybe the mutations are all sold before the sales, and as for the supposed expert,i think he is a pioneer in mutations,i will leave it at that, garyh
Her and MF comment was that it wasn't yellow,it was brick red?????? a yellow headed bird should be the same yellow as the belly which i couldn't believe that there are such birds around until now.If i had seen that bird,i would have snapped it up so quick the owner wouldn't have seen me catch it

The pale Shades in Head Colours seem to get a lot of attention at the moment,
actually they are quiet easy to get going providing you can secure Stock in the either Red Heads or Yellow Heads, Hens look just as spectacular
as Cock Birds as long as they have a full Head Colour.
