You know if your finch has a cold when:

* He/ She is sitting at the bottom of the cage.
* He/ She is all puffed up.
* He/ She has their eyes closed and doesn't move much.

This has happened to me before with a female Zebra finch and I was told to put a hot cup of water with a cloth on top of it next to her.

After that all you can do is hope that he/ she gets better.

Btw She survived.

am glad she survived, its never an easy time when a bird becomes ill.
with birds those symptoms can cover a lot of varying ailments.
the main thing with a sickbird is to quarantine it, in a cage which has extra heat , higher humidity and no drafts. sometimes that is all that can be done.
antibiotics can be used but only as directed. usually when a bird displays the symptoms though it is to late for antibiotics.
a lot of times we wont have a clue as to what is wrong with the bird and have to be patient while waiting to see if it recovers. we all lose birds without ever knowing why.
main thing we can do is to try and provide the best possible enviroment for our birds to live in
nature sure can be a bitch at times.
