I was told a few years back that if you catch the birds and turn them over ,so you can see the feather line underneath the bottom beck,on a hen it will be a curve shape,on a cock bird it will be a upside down v shape, more pointed i suppose,i use this method on my birds and im about 95 per cent right,try before the DNA and see if you can see any difference,hope this helps ,garyh.

Thanks CC, yep I've been covering half the cage so they have somewhere quiet to retreat to, and trying to keep an eye on all my family members at once . Been bitterly cold the last two days, so I don't want to put them outside just yet, even though the cages would be in a quieter spot.

Hmmm the eye ring seems to be a lot paler in the hen.

Jay I usually judge my juveniles by the brow ridge between the eyes when selling them .
Males are broader with a bulkier head shape and the females are generally more slender... this I read in Russell Kingstons , Keeping and breeding finches and seed eaters .
I sell them as "unsexed" however i give an educated guess and offer a return of purchase if I am incorrect but haven't had any returned yet so I'm guessing that the method is accurate .
Any chance of a side by side picture of the top view of the heads of birds in question , and ill take a stab at it for you ?

Why not just wave a magnet, needle, wedding ring or any other random piece of metal hanging on a string over their heads? This is scientifically proven to work at least 50% of the time.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay.
When I was releasing them, I took some pics - here they are:

Bird 1: Bird 1 left, bird 2 right Bird 2 Also, I thought (but I'm not 100% sure) I saw them this morning, coming out of a nest in the back of the shelter. We'll see how that develops...
