Sexing star finches

I am trying to sex the three star finches I purchased earlier this year as young ones just colouring up. Am I right in saying that only the cock bird will sing. I believe all three have been singing but not entirely sure. They don't have the best of head colour so not sure if they are not well coloured cocks or hens. I will try to get some pictures and post these. Any help would be great.

Any head colour under the beak indicates a cock regardless of other head colour. Singing would also indicate cocks.
Cheers,
Sam

There is an old fashioned way and a more modern way to sex Stars
the more modern way is to pull down their pants for positive ID,if you can find them
the old fashioned way is to have a bird in each hand, beaks facing forward
look closely at the width of sculls, the hen will have a narrow scull
the cock has a much broader scull, its very distinct and very accurate.

All my hen Stars have red under the beak. Most others don't though.

Some of Tiaris's hens have more red all around the head are then some normal cock birds.

That's what you get when you breed for colour. Craig
