I know how much you all love snakes. Any idea on the Id of this one. I don't think it has quite the right look for a red-bellied. The photo was taken west of Tamworth.

Looks like a really fat red bellied black to me, can see just a tinge of red towards the rear. Looks like it has been on improved pasture.

If it is a Red Belly...especially one that size can you send it up to Qld ?? just so we can get rid of some of our Cane Toads?

I don't think that would work as the cane toad would kill the snake   Craig

If that is the head in the top corner, I's say a Tiger, as their head is very broad with no discernible neck, where as a Red-Belly has quite a discernible head & narrow neck.

My guess is a brown snake despite the black colour. A red-belly with that much girth showing would show far more obvious red/pink underneath IMO. He/she looks very healthy.

Most likely red bellied black - color variations are not much to go on in reptiles - green treesnakes can be almost black, northern forms of RBB can be cream underneath. Scales seem too fine for black tiger although head blunt as it is points to this, hard to make out but it appears that there is no inter scale colouring for spotted black snake
Try and get a shot of the head that will help with general ID, else you will have to key it out based on belly, vent and head scales etc.
