When is the best time to harvest Swamp/November grass?

Hi all

I have located a large deposit of November grass (about 2000 square meters) and was wondering is it best to collect it green or wait till it dries out and goes straw like in colour and texture?

I know my birds like eating the green stuff and still use it for the nests...maybe a mix of both is best.?.

Its also currently growing in my back yard, front yard and all through the street.

After the weekends rains and a few days of sun it will be everywhere which is good for my bird.

Hi El,i find it easier to rake up when it is just about to let go and you can get some green heads in it at the same time, but the general idea of it is to get it in the bag and store it whilst it is available. Craig

I'm yet to find a supply up here in Brisbane so I can't help you but my harvest would be earlier than yours anyway. Looks like the QFS aren't collecting this year which is a pity as it isn't cheap. When I asked at the November meeting ( it is called November grass after all) I was told that they get it from a cane farmers place half way to the Gold Coast from Brisbane. I need to reconnoiter the area soon (if I can find any) as the storm season might just rot it soon after it matures.
