months back i purchased one of those battery powered mouse zappers - in my case not worth buying. left it laying on the floor had too many false hits. today for some reason i decided to throw it out.
picked it up and saw grass hanging out of the entrance to the trap. bloody mice i thought as i pushed the grass aside to take a better look.
much to my surprise and believe me i was F surprised out flew a pied cock ruddy......no eggs yet but lined with feathers! never had them nest ever at found level

I've had Orange Breasteds nest in a heap of grass in the corner of the avairy which was intended for the quail , but not Ruddies. Just goes to show, different strokes for different birdies.

you had fair warning there was a pun.

On a more serious note it just shows the range of receptacles that birds find attractive. With the most dominant breeding pair generally taking the bet/highest nesting area, I wonder if this pair were classed as the lowest in the pecking order of your flock of ruddies.....and this time No pun intended.
