Gouldians need seeding grass by the handful when nesting and raising chicks. If I was you I would forget the maggots and try gardening. Do yourself a succession of millett patches to feed the Gouldians.

Thistles covered in aphids are the only live food i have had taken by my Gouldians, and not sure that it isnt really the thistles they are eating and just that the aphids get in the way.

Agree with Finchbreeder ....Goulds love greens, and sprouted seeds etc....especially when they have young...

I agree with both of you but i think Paul is talking about blowfly maggots from a tackle shop.If gouldians are in a mixed collection and they are fed bushfly maggots, they will eat them.Whether the extra protein helps, i don't know but it want hurt them infact i believe that when i fed bushfly maggots in the early days of blue gouldians it helped them overcome early deaths imo. My goulds are in with others that have livefood...so if they require it...its there for the taking...mind you have only ever seen one young gould eating/playing with mealworms, they dont look at maggots or termites...so I guess feed what you think is right, if they require it they will eat it..

I've always noticed it was the Hens at the live food tray. Not always because they had young in the nest either, but also when they were sitting on eggs. Maybe it was for replenishing their energy levels after creating and laying eggs. The carbohydrates in the maggots would be good energy for the Hens and may be something the hens are craving/and sourcing for their own recovery.
