Hi all, noticed at a dealer today, some gouldians ticketed as split Blues.
One of them was a DF Euro Yellow Cockbird.
Question: am I correct in thinking that if this bird has not been bred with a blue series or split blue series
bird before, how can they know that it is definitely split for Blue ?
Wouldn't this DF Euro Yel ck have to have a father that was either SF or DF Euro Yel and a Euro Yel mother,
of which both could be split for Blue, but in that pairing only 50% of young could be split for Blue,
25% could be Blue and 25% could carry NO BLUE at all !
Am I right that this bird cannot be a guaranteed split ?
I know it's different with Aus Yellows as they can both be split for each other, but this bird is definitely
a DF Euro Yellow.
If am wrong, that is good, but if I'm right, I want new buyers to be wary about buying something that
just might not be what they're told they are.

What you have said is true but one of the parents might have been a Pastel or Silver and all of the young would be split blue,even the double factor cock because silver and pastels are Euro yellow back blues but in saying that you would never know until unless you breed a blue to them,trust no one unless you know the original breeder or start your own collection with a blue bird and breed your own splits from good strong normals. I won't be bothering with those birds anyway.
I don't like the idea of paying for 'possibles'.
Wouldn't have minded my own Blue young this year, but
will have to hope my Blue and Normal pairs do well,
and chase up Blues to go with my best sized splits for next year.

I'd have doubts because it seems very odd that a breeder would sell a dealer a DF EY split Blue. This would be a very desirable bird for those wishing to breed those wishy washy white Gouldians - pastel, silver or whatever you call them.

Great to see the anti mutation breeders voicing their negative thoughts again ,putting the breeders and birds down again,and to a new member i thought this forum was about encouragement ,and helping others,seems a few have their own ideas and persist in trying to put their point across,good advice from Craig,garyh
