Will parrot finches(BF and RF) interbreed? If so will it only occur if there are insufficient hens?

Outside of munia hybridisation, the BF RF hybrid would have to be one of the more common hybrids. You should avoid housing them together. Both species can be reasonably hard to sex, so you can't be certain that you have true pairs.

Thank you! I'll let the kids know they have to choose which one they like the best

Alternatively be nice and build two avairys to they can have both. Only half serious.

Not very strong pair bonds in PFs especially Blue-faced (would shag a dead mouse if it was still warm).

Years ago I had a breeding pair of each in an aviary, both had young in nests at the same time, but still out of the Red Faced nest came a hybrid. The male blue faced are so randy they chase anything green

A second avairy would be nice, just have to sell it to the wife, I already got the 'look' when I mentioned the need for a separation cage

I have the same problem with hubby. That's why I was only half serious. Talk him into an avairy every 6 or 7 years. Good luck with whatever you decide. But advising the good lady that avairys of pretty finches enhance the look of the backyard may work.

My 'brief' for the aviary was for it be a feature in the garden and to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I think she will agree to a small metal type cage hidden around the back to be used for separation/holding. Ill probably go for the BFPF as I already have 'red' from the African Firefinches that I will be having.
