Hi all

Hi everyone.
Have just joined as I'm keen to find new sources of information and ideas for keeping my birds. I have had finches for around 5 years now but never really had a successful setup due to aviary location and aspect,so breeding success has been minimal. Over the past summer I decided to start over and rebuild my aviary in the hope I will have more success. I now have a 4m x 2.5 aviary with a northerly aspect. In this I currently have a pair each of ruddies, stars and red faced parrot finches. Until now each pair nested twice but I was only able to produce the one lonesome red face. The stars had clear eggs both times and the ruddies managed to hatch two chicks both times but they didn't live beyond the first week. I have now cleaned the aviary out and removed all nesting options for the winter hoping that a spell will have them ready to go once spring arrives. Also wanting to get a pair of painteds for the next season too.
Anyway, looking forward to chatting with you guys and learning things to help my breeding success.
Thanks
Daz

Welcome to the forum. When you are ready to get them breeding, try a wide selection of nests (at least 6 or 7) of varying types in different locations (from one end to the other and differing heights and aspects).

Thanks for the welcome everyone, and the tip finchbreeder.
Hoping my birds can get through this cold weather and wind we are having at the moment. If they do It'll be more proof of my new aviary being much better. It has a lowish roof of just over 2m, but do you think adding the 4th pair in spring will be ok? Not too many pairs?
Cheers

As you say, let the 3 pair weather the winter, then add the 4th pair come spring. And then the nests, and watch things happen. Give them a little seeding grasses from mid winter to encourage them so they will be all ready to go when they get the nests.
