Hi team,

Last season I bred this cock bird. This isn't the clearest of pictures but he has a huge blotch of yellow on the back of his neck (SF euro yellow). Although its nothing amazing to look at I did a bit of research about it and found an American website which recognised it as a mutation from memory? Unfortunately I can't find it anymore and I'm pretty certain one of you guys will be able to tell me exactly whats going (too much gouldian genetics for one brain to handle).

Split aus yellow is my guess, what colours were the parents?

Cock: BH PB SF euro yellow
Hen: YH WB DF euro yellow

He was bred in that pairs 3rd season and is the only one of 30ish young they have produced with that colouring. Weird.

I had a pair like that. Then one chick all of a sudden has ond small patch of yellow at the back of his head. Ay is one of those well hidden genes.

If you want some info on genes (sorry i am not sure how much you already know) Look on the lady gouldian website. They have a great beginner guide to gouldian genetics and its explained in a way thats easy to get.

Thanks mate. I've been breeding Gouldians for a few years now but when it comes to genetics I am a bit of a beginner. Thanks for the info, i'll be sure to check it out.

Learn something new everyday. I was always led to believe that yellow back hens with a purple breast were SF and with a white breast were DF. Thanks Garyh. I need to do some reading haha.

This is where I started learning,

http://www.finchinfo.com/genetics/lady_ ... colors.php

It will explain why single factor birds with a white breast are visually yellow.

Enjoy.
