To follow up on something mentioned by Uraeginthus in the lounge.
What method's do people use to tell the sexes of their birds?
Let's see if we can come up with a list of different ways to achieve this.

First you find yourself a piece of string about 18 inches long. Next get yourself an old magnet and tie that to the end of the string. Swing the string around and around and around and around and around then let it go so the magnet hits you fair between the eyes. Now pluck two feathers from each bird and send off to Curtin University then sit back, nurse your injury and wait for the results.

Sexing Diamonds.
First of all,in adult birds the cock tends to have smaller but many more white spots on the sides and the hen has larger and less of them.
In breeding condition birds, hens have more of a red beak whilst cocks have a plum coloured bill.
In most strains the hen has a light pink to white eye ring and the cocks have a red eye ring.
Also in most strains, the cock has a more silvery crown and the hens grey.
In one strain i had years ago,the cocks had red feathers around the vent and the hens didn't.

Hen in the left hand , Cock bird in the Right. ,But to be sure either Feather or DNA your birds at a reputable clinic. Some birds Like Redface and Canary you
can vent sex them , but even the EXPERTS, as divulged in an other post make mistakes, and you do have to wait when they are in breeding condition. And when is that???

Red-faced plumage differences:
Male when fully coloured:
- more intense colour in all red & green areas
- red totally envelops behind the eye
- some red feathers on the vent (usually)
- longer, more pronounced tail "pins"
+ will "sing".

Redbrow plumage differences.
Cock birds red brow usually brighter and larger extending more above the eye,bit like Pete's double bars.
Hens breast grey brown compared to cocks gun metal/blue grey, very obvious when they are lined up on a perch.
Cock has a brighter olive green back and yellow collar, hen slightly duller.
Cock has a brighter red rump and tail feathers are black compared to hens dull black tail feathers.Cocks red rump feathers can extend over the sides, abit like my avatar lesser redbrow.
The main difference is the steely blue grey of the cocks breast. Craig
