I have recently gone down with my second bout of some kind of Peruvian illness so thought I would post an update of the trip.

Relax, photos will follow shortly.

It's funny at home I walk and see sparrows, minor birds and red brows...here the most common street bird is a jacarini. There are 100s of them I have seen some nice black birds and caught my first glimpse of a tanager. Not sure what kind but it was bright blue and as it flew it stopped me in my tracks. There are heaps of little humming birds and soft bills in the street. This place is a real bird lovers dream

I'll be heading to the zoo tomorrow if I feel better so I should get another good round of photos.

I saw some birds in petshops here but they only have gourds and Zebs mostly at 60 soles a pair which is about $24.

I say a small shoebox sized cage will yellow siskins (I suspect they were trapped birds). The price.........15 soles a pair or roughly $4 a pair. I was half tempted to buy them and let them all go in the park.

I'll try and post some pics but without a pc I may wait till I return.

That must be such a sight walking down the street seeing those birds flying freely!
If Jacarini, tanagers, humming birds, softbills and bright blue birds are the Peruvian equivalent of sparrows, mynahs and blackbirds. You may end up looking at caged versions of sparrows, mynahs and blackbirds when you go to the zoo!
Yellow siskins at $4 a pair, they must be the zebra equivalent.

Isn't it so funny what we take for granted? Home here in Sydney visitors are blown away by the rainbow lories, corellas, rosellas, sulphurs, magpies, currawongs,blue wrens, silvereyes, the list could go on. What we take as normal here in our lucky country is an eyeopener for birdos from around the world. Have travelled a fair bit and it is just great to see what the locals class as normal, humming birds in parts of Mexico and the States are as common as sparrows, Pekin Robins in the parks in Beijing don't raise an eyebrow. In Turkey the original rock pigeon is still used as a provider of fertilizer with pigeon houses still a part of residences. Was lucky enough in 2001 on the Greek Island of Kalymnos to see the Little Owl up close and personal, the locals couldn't understand my excitement. Orange footed scrub hens in Darwin CBD, Scrub Turkeys not more than 10ks from Sydney CBD. How good is that?

Elferoz777 is no doubt experiencing a trip of a life time, jacarinis like sparrows, we can only dream.
