I have question for someone out there its a topic which probably doesnt get talked about very much.
What numbers of grey singers are left in the country if so are they viable in terms of still being able to breed and are they the only ones breeding?

I haven't seen 1 of those for 20 years. I do hope that they are still around. They are absolutely Great Whistlers.

I don't know of any young birds. If this is a true picture, they are on the way out.

I would love to know if there are some being bred but I have had the same response on the phone with a couple people saying they are around in small numbers but are as old as the hills hoist.

You are probably right, last i heard there was some very old cock birds around and no hens, they were so old that hybridising with green singer hens proved infertile eggs which is good in imo but not for for the grey singers purity.

I hope this is so but I suspect they are now gone.

I was told by a member of our finch club that there is a fellow he knows with a substantial number of pairs.

Last year I was fortunate enough to see some of those old cock birds talked about in qld. They where in the same cage as I saw them three years previous.
It is a shame that the grey singer has gone like so many others but I guess we should try our best and make sure it dosen't happen to too many more of our finch species in australian aviculture.
Fingers crossed.

I believe Marcus Pollard from Tasmania has some, he wrote an article for them on his website
