At present I have a trio of the above birds, one cock and two hens.
I can convert to a cage size of 1700mm long and 500mm wide for the three birds.
Should I leave the three birds all together in this cage in the hope that both hens will both nest in this size cage, or should I separate the two hens, let one hen go to nest and breed with the cock until young are raised, then take out the cock and put him with the other hen in another cage away from the first hen to breed.

Sorry, should also have added will the hens squabble and fight over the cock bird if they are housed together in a 1700mm cage, and would the cock mate with both hens in the same cage.

Imo the cage is too small for a trio.

I would buy another cock bird and run two pairs separately if you can. The hens might not take ti the cock bird as fast as you like.

A trio will not work as a compatable pair will hound the other female. When you say 1700, must mean long. What are the other dimensions?.
If you had the 3 sides closed, than you can pair up in an other cage. quite a few breeders I know use cages of 1500 x600x 600 with good success. All depends on your feeding regime.
Might be a bit late in the season to pair up Red Siskins though.

SOORY I didn,t realise you are in Great Britain, So your season is coming up in a couple of months. I hope you intend to breed indoors, with supplymentary HEAT,
as the Red Siskin is not a good parent when it comes to keeping the babies warm. After about 6 days, they do not sit on the chicks at night.
