It is a good seeding grass especially for larger finches. As a plant it is very tough & seeds well but suckers up all over the place after a while and has a tendency to spread over time. Even a short piece cut off under the ground will persist. Best cut from the wild & feed the heads to the birds IMO.

Or get half a 44gallon drum (or plastic equivalent) and plant some in.

To find Panic (at least what we call it in Victoria)
It always grows in at least a part shaded area. You will find it is one of the only grasses that will grow under pine trees. Also it is common under growth of shrubs in suburban gardens and along fences.
If you want to grow it in an aviary you will need it under wire or it will be demolished.

That's Panic Veldt grass an excellent green seed head to feed but far too soft to withstand life as an aviary plant. The subtropical panics (Green, Gatton, Guinea Grass, etc.) are far more resilient & better suited for aviary planting.
