Hi Gents,

Could anyone share experiences on whether livefood is necessary for rearing Plumheads. I live in the US where termites and clean gentles/maggots aren't readily available, however mealworms and waxmoth larvae are. Is it possible to rear young well on just sprouted seed and eggfood (if I can get them to take it)?

seeding grasses are most important in my experience.
offer as many varieties as you can, as long as not toxic.
even seedmix grown to half-ripe is better than none.

mini mealies may be taken, a vinegar fly trap may assist them also.

to answer your question, no livefood is not essential, but they may accept it and if they do the young will be all the better for it.

I completely agree. It's best to offer a wide and balanced diet however live food is not entirely necessary. I cut back on the amount of live food offered in the height of summer and winter to deter breeding at these times but that has little effect on the plumheads. You will find larger clutches and more young with livefood
