Hi, I have quite a few nests with babies different species. A nest with two Painted with pin feathers so not just born were thrown from nest found them dead. The nest has been pulled apart. I have some canaries that I have had
quite a few years they are all sitting on eggs that won't hatch as I don't have male in aviary. I put a young canary in recently would it be likely to do this damage. Aviary has Red Parrot, Painted, pr Longtail, pr Parsons and stars and pr Goulians. Any thoughts would be appreciated .

Parsons &/or Longtails could be worth watching. They also could easily crossbreed if in the same aviary.

Agree with Tiaris but the culprits would most likely be the Parsons. Craig

Adding more nests may help. But if they really want the one the Painteds have maybe not.

Thanks everyone for information. The pardons do have a nest with babies so could be the long tails.

I have 4 Painted fledglings and saw Gouldian grabbed one with its beak ,just held his neck for a sec. That was near Gouldian nest. So everyone is suspect. Good luck.

Lyn,

I have found this many times with stars and Painteds, Gouldians are very aggressive if they do not have a nest site and want that nest but Parsons are another issue.. Have had goulds rear in painted nests as well as stars nests, grass nest as compared to boxes. Gouldians WILL pull out chicks from the nest which the dominant pair wants. Have had more than one hen lay in the nest . Have had 10 eggs in one nest and they all hatched same time, raised 8 fed by one hen and cock. I think he was a player.

Just put couple of nest boxes, half filled with nesting material, not close together and things may work out. If your aviary is crowded I would suggest that the Parsons may be the culprits.

It may not even be any of your finches,Painteds are notoriously bad nest builders.I have been standing outside my aviary and witnessed young Painteds fall through their nest and hit the ground at the exact stage your's were at,because their nest gave way.Watch the other finches for sure, but don't eliminate this possibility.Maybe give some coarser material to make a stronger base for the Painteds.
