Parrot Finches

I've had a male parrot finch for some time now. About a month ago I introduced a new pair to the aviary. Unfortunately, the female died soon after that.
I can not recall that I've heard my male singing. The new male sang from day one.
Today I notice the new male chasing the other one without end. The new one at two occasions even got onto the others back, holding on by biting it behind the head as if it was mating.
Does males behave like this or was the original male actualy a female?
