Hi

Found this chap just now, between two breeding cages inside my main aviary. His belly is full

What to do please?! I have zero experience with this.

Is it a brown tree python

Two options:
- Snake catcher.
- Shotgun.

It looks nice.

Call wires

1. It is a Python and non-venomous

2. It looks too big to have passed through 12mm mesh but they can be surprising . . certainly too big now to pass back out again
Probably gained access by following mouse scent

3. Remove/ check all brush, boxes etc to be sure there are no others

4. Look for any possible access points and plug them

5. Use the 'search' facility for further advice

6. ASAP replace 12mm mesh with 6mm; if you don't have holding facilities put the 6mm on the inside, and then remove (or leave in place) the 12mm

I am assuming that by now you have given the serpent a 'better home'

If you just confine you action to 'removing' this snake, there will be another

Best of luck . . but where snakes are concerned you have to make your own luck

PS Avoid the 'shotgun' unless it is a 410. 'Collateral Damage' can be a problem

I've been very lucky to find a local WIRES guy to come and get it. It's been ID'd as a Brown Tree Snake, with a belly full of finch.

First I've ever had in the aviary - at least to my knowledge.

Thought it was

They are pretty common around here and we have always called them Night Carpets, so assumed they were Pythons

But checked a couple of snake reference books and looks like they are indeed more correctly called Brown Tree Snakes . .

AND they are slightly venomous . . didn't know that either

Apparently they can grow to 7ft (2.1m) but I have never seen one anywhere near that length . . and 'Amen to that!'



PS . . A lot of parrot breeders are herpetologists as well

I find this mix of hobbies lacking in appeal . . But live and let live . . might be addictive like finch breeding

Yes, Arthur they are "back fanged" snakes and are natives here but have become a really invasive species in Guam and have devastated local birds there. Had Green and Brown Tree Snakes as a youngster, they were ok but the Brown Tree Snakes were like a rabid Pit Bull as compared to a lap dog Corgi, big eyes and dead set aggressive.

Hope he took it a long way away, where there is one there is another, given its size.
