Safe insecticide in an aviary birdbath ?

After watching my birds enthusiastically fluttering around in their bird bath, I wondered was there a safe product that I could add to their water to eliminate any mites, lice etc, seems to me it would be a way for them to self medicate or is there no "silver bullet" ? not that I am aware of any problems but as a precautionary measure, would appreciate any advice from our learned friends here.
