I would say that they are all but gone from Aus now but i can remember them being between $2,000 to $3,000 a pair a long time ago. IMO, these prices were the demise of them,if you had a fat wallet you could buy them as it didn't matter if you couldn't breed them as you had something very few had. It's probably the most colourful parrot finch available to other countries. Craig

Hmmm I will have to check but there is talk of a guy up here with untolds for sale.... or like I said to the guy that informed me...maybe he was talking about the Pintailed Whydah....but he did say they were parrot finches

I don't know of any around lately either, but have to again take issue with the notion of a high price of birds being a cause of their decline. I rather believe that high prices are far more often very clear evidence that a species has already declined rather than being a cause for the decline. In most cases a high price also provides some measure of insurance/incentive that those with them in their possession will do their utmost to try to breed them with all the effort they can muster. I can think of no species of finch at all in Australia since I was a child where the price has been a significant contributing factor to that species decline in numbers.

I'd love a couple of pairs of these, but not at that price. Beautiful birds. I'd get em breeding.
