Hi, just wondering what other breeders experiences are with breeding gouldians in late March.
My birds are housed in large cages, outdoors but completely enclosed area. I have no artificial lighting for them and being in
Melbourne the days are getting shorter very quickly. What i'm asking is, what is the latest date, clutch has been reared successfully in these conditions in Melbourne?
Responses would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks

In my experience gouldians are just getting into their breeding cycle in March through to September/October. Craig

Because we have such hot summers here, we expect them to breed in Autumm and Spring with a break over summer and winter.

They breed as the days get shorter which coincides with the enough food resources following the start of the wet season in their natural habitat. Nothing to do with Summer being too hot.

Well mine obviously think winter is too cold too. As they only breed in spring and autumn and have nests and mates available all year round. Or maybe they just like to do things the easy way like me.

Under the right conditions they will breed all year but this isn't advised.
I paired mine up in late December and although I'm having a good season I will need to remove breeding boxes at the end of next month due to lack of holding space for young.

Thanks to everyone for their responses!
Perhaps a nieve question, but how do the baby gouldians survive such long winter night without being fed by the parents?
At the moment there are approx. 12 hours of daylight, and as April and May arrive obviously the nights will be longer.

Mixed season for me.

I usually give nest boxes half way through Jan , this year put them in on new years day.

Started fresh with two new pairs from new bloodline this year first time breeders.

Pair one fledged first nest and incubating second round all according to plan.

Pair two has laid and abandoned two clutches.

Plan was to remove nests after two rounds ... now in a dilema ... do i keep nests in and let pair 3 go for a third? Or remove them after second clutch and cut my losses .....

Will have to reasses on how many blues fledge in clutch 2 as in first clutch only had 1 blue of 5 chics
