Hello Gouldian afinchionados (geddit?)...

Hooray, the Gouldian mutation guide on the Finch Stuff web site has been updated after the longest time, and now looks rather good: http://finchstuff.com/gouldianmutations

However, it needs your input please…

1. Fact checking: Is there any information that you believe to be glaringly incorrect, or missing? Please let me know what and why, with references if possible.

2. Photos: Do you have, or could you please take, some nice photos of these Gouldians that you'll be happy for Finch Stuff to use?

- Orange(Yellow)-headed
- Seagreen
- Blue

Single factor Australian yellows will also occassionally have a yellow spot on the back of the head. And I have no doubt that if people went round examining the feet of the single factor Aussie yellows they would find white toes. All of the traits that are normal for a pied bird. Like the site Finchy.

Just looking through these notes on blues. Do all you blue breeders breed in indoor or heated aviaries?
How does/did this blue mutation originate? I don't mean by breeding birds already containing the genes, but from scratch. What colour combinations created the gene in the first place? If inbreeding creates this weakness of the immune system couldn't it be improved by starting again sort of thing?
Sounds like alot of work/money/time for a bird that's gonna have health issues. They do look nice.

The healthy blues are bred exactly the same as normals. All mutations originate by the chance mutation of a gene and can not be predicted, just developed once it does show up. So no you can not start again from scratch, accept by the tried and true method of inbreeding then out crossing then repeating the process endlessly. Inbreeding can not cause weaknesses. It can only amplify existing weakness. It is a lot of work, anything worthwhile is.
The birds will have health issues when people keep inbreeding without sufficent outcrossing. It is taking short cuts that cause the problems. And yes it can be frustrating waiting for the results which take years to achieve. But those that are willing to put the effort in will reap the rewards and those that are not will just have to pay the money.
