Hi guys

Who is going?

I am teeing up some green finches and goldfinches and will be going up with some mates.

Ill be in my Parramatta Auckland 9s shirt so feel free to say gday.

Big sale, big crowds as usual. Personally I don't like these open air venues much.
Not a great range of finches on offer from what I could see. I wasn't selling, arrived a bit late and spent more time talking than looking so may have missed stuff.
Andrew (Dealer) had 2 pair of Pekin Robins and a single Magpie Robin for sale. Asking (sit down for this) $3800 pair for the Pekins. One pair the cock looked a bit low on condition and other pair the hen an eye issue. Alf Watts was selling Fawn Painteds. Good looking birds at $300 for colour and a split.
I'd be interested in comments on the last photo. These things were being used extensively.

I would put a bird on those things. ..

Did you see he also had Pacific parrolets 3800 for a blue with a white split blue.

Only 1300 above the current asking price.

There wasn't great deal there and canaries were plentiful and pricey.

Paid 4K for PR's 30 yrs ago (but I was a pretty soft touch) and they were top birds, which paid for themselves many times over . .




The cardboard carry boxes would be okay if you were taking the birds over the road from the venue . . but no further

But no self respecting finchos go to a sale without a carry box, even if they have no intention to buy . .

I thought the use of these type of boxes were not allowed/outlawed?
The use of these type of 'Cardboard transport boxes" IMO should be actively discouraged and not used.
It is obvious to most bird people, as Arthur mentioned, that there is a Real problem when using this type of transport containers IE. the welfare of the bird contained within such a box.

So why are We all allowing people who use these boxes?
When I say we:
1. the trade table selling the box 'specifically marked' to transport birds.
2. the buyer or the end user of the box.
3. the person selling the bird to the buyer.
4. the bird sale stewards and the other patrons in attendance for allowing these boxes to be used.

I am not trying to blame any one person but all of us should except some responsibility.

The thought of a 'Victorian' type of problem/situation comes to mind as it only takes one photo to be splashed across the media and a over zealous person to use against all of us bird keepers.

Well said Al, hear hear. They are the same as when sellers used to use milk cartons years ago and was one of the reasons that Sunday market bird selling has been banned, our bird sales are not Sunday markets but if we follow this trend and allow it all States will be branded like Victoria has been.
Sale stewards please take note and ask the seller to remove them and that all wire cage,it's your job to over see this as every one carries a mobile with a camera in it. Craig

Looks like the seller bought some hot chips around the corner and then repainted the boxes

I am with Arthur.

These transport carton boxes have been around in Europe since Adam was a boy. suit their situation when every little town and village has a bird club/sale/petshop and you just take the birds up the road.
Not suitable for our conditions and the distance that people travel, but maybe common sence is not that common.

As for the Pekins. I would happily pay that sort of money if they were young DNA birds and i could get them to my aviary here in NZ. After all I have had one planted out for Pekin Robins for years how; forever the optimist when it comes to this species.

Some forty years ago I imported dogs from Europe at a cost of $9000 when my annual gross income was $8000. Never a moments regret.

the boxes that the Pekins and Painted finches are displayed in here were also available as carton disposable boxes at the World bird show I attended last year.
