If you look at the bird’s origin (Hecks, Gouldian, Painted fire-tail and red-faced Parrot finches) then the “Winter” is their natural breeding season in the tropics. With an abundance of food in captivity they will continue to breed unless you do something about it like Mike Fiedler recommends (Separate the sexes, remove nest, place on a maintenance diet). This is damned tall order for a mixed collection and if you don’t have spare aviaries but if you provide heated nests then if can work as other have shown in previous posts.

just adding my 2 cents worth again. most of the aussie finches should be all right with the cold . but i have been told to watch the africans they suffer a bit from egg binding in winter. esp the the blue caps....pete

After my Gouldians producing 8 young I have 3 pair on 15 eggs again.
My Painted pair are on eggs again too. You'd think it would be too cold.
Not so, they are flat out at the moment.

Your location has alot to do with it. If you live in Melbourne or areas of cold winters you are not wise to let the softer types breed. Sure they will breed but how many breeding hens will be lost and when the good weather arrives you are with the many looking for replacements.
Except for Gouldians, Javas and Blue Face P/F I really try to stop the others from breeding.
You have plenty of time in the warmer months to get your birds to produce.
Anyway its nice for us to have a break as well
