Just curious, are these worse off than the Pekins?

Both critical I would suggest.

Is depressing. I fear by the time i finally have the space to build big enough aviaries and get really serious about the hobby, half the birds i wish to keep will be gone....

Neither Magpie Robins nor Pekin Robins need large aviaries to breed, provided that their dietary needs are met . .

What they probably need for their long term survival is a bit of new blood

And the mesia's are all but finished i take it?

If its lack of new blood thats the problem, then they are not worth the $3,000 or so price tag in my opinion. I guess despite starting out with shamas, pekins, mesia's and magpie-robins, we'll be left with just bulbul's as the only asian songbird in the hobby. :(

and thats all thanks to a feral population.

Probably a fair summation . .

Your opinion of the 'worth' of the birds is just that . . an opinion, which I respect . . but to purchase, is your decision . . provided you can find the birds to purchase

Many of the older brigade who have kept and bred some of these species, no longer do so . .

And some have become what I believe are called "Key-board Warriors"

If you live in a state with liberal bird laws, and you have the dedication to breed softbills, then you are probably better off in a number of ways by tackling our natives . . but again . . your choice

And . .

To those still 'hanging in there' with the Asiatics . .
