Just posting this for a friend for comment. The breeding history is from 2 normal looking birds with the exception of the cock
bird having an all black tail.It and it's sibling were all bred in an outdoor aviary facing north with plenty of sunlight.

Seen this happen before..moults out.. thinking might be dietary in that bird not able to process something properly. ...good luck with it if it isn't that and it stays that way

Holy sh.t Batman!

Looks stunning at first but then, maybe. Looks like a cross between a Rainbow and a Noisy Pitta to me. Would love to see further photos when the moult is complete. I personally would hang on to this bird . Is this the first moult? Regardless, would still hang onto it. Maybe Vette is right but still would monitor and retain.

I have to agree with VP, it always moults out. The deficiency is not always related to the lack of D3 but other vitamins and minerals and liver/gut problems as well.
Keep sending pics as it goes through a few more moults, thanks for sharing Jack  Craig

ps, what is the white breasted cock bird with the black in its white mask, now that is also unusual as well.

I see 2 birds there that are different. The white breast with the bit of black on the head and the obvious black breasted. Can you find out if/how these 2 are related. I would definately keep both of them, and anything related to them to do some experiments and observations if they were mine. Thanks for posting, and if you can keep us updated with pics and relationships of the birds that would be great.

Not a bad looker, orange head, black breast, green back. So how do we describe the rust coloured belly? I have looked at the Gouldian Genetic Forecaster and there is nothing close. Wow, maybe something new!

Hope it goes ok.

I am looking at the pictures closely and agree with FB that the white breasted bird has some black tinge in the head, but I also see in that particular bird that it has a much darker yellow colour on the lower body and a distinct red line on the breast between the white and yellow. Beautiful bird. I have had some with the same line but nothing like this.

Lucky you.

It looks like purple feathers are already starting to poke through, so I suspect VP and Craig are correct that this will moult out.

Having said that, it still look very cool!
