Sad to see that happen but maybe if the powers to be had of allowed more out to private breeders years ago
when requested and without the red tape then maybe they would be in the same numbers as some of our
other rare parrots such as the Princess, Scarlet Chested, Regents, Hooded, Golden Shouldered etc.

Maybe a bit hard to judge from the clip but the "facility" compares pretty unfavourably with the aviaries of the specialist parrot breeders that I know . . and if it has been breached by a cat and a rat (as I think I heard at the start) the security badly needs an upgrade . . Hailmesh anybody??

AND . . 'All in together this cold weather' might not be the best way of containing a bacterial outbreak??



E orix no doubt remembers Fred Lewitzka breeding O-B's in the early 70's and basically getting a kick up the bum for doing so

And I can remember one of the geniuses who was in charge of conservation in Queensland in the early 70's opining that it didn't matter if the Golden-shoulder became extinct because the genes would still exist in the closely related Hooded . . I kid you not

50 years down the track and nothing has changed, it seems . .

Nothing has changed, except that the Golden-shoulders under the care of aviculturists have thrived to the point of being hard to give away . .

And Orange-bellies, under the care of the 'anti-aviculture movement' are now closer to extinction than at any time in their history

And that reminds me of another slogan attributed (rightly or wrongly) to the Qld authorities(?) . .

I tend to agree with both of you, it is best to have birds farmed out IN different facilities IN different locations not all in one basket where an out break like this would and has been devastating.
This Government needs their heads read when it comes to things like this,they have NO fn idea of the wealth of information and experience of similar species in our aviaries of competent and very experienced breeders. They would rather see them the birds dead than in our aviaries for some reason one of which would putting some incompetent sucker/s out of a cushie Government job.
Are they embarrassed for the media putting up stuff like this,NO they love being shown that they are trying to save a rare parrot that THEY ONLY CAN DO. rwwwwh!! NSW aviculture is now putting forward submissions in their new licencing codes that aviculture be more involved with Zoo's and NPWS in similar situations like this for the same reason,WE have the hands on experience and know how not Uni graduates.

Wow just Wow...incompetent... .soaked seed bacteria..hmm never heard of virkon S?? ..40 left in the wild (that they know of) bit like the elusive blackthroats ...also having that many in each aviary is just asking for trouble when there is not many left at all (shakes head in disbelief)

I concur with the earlier statements and observations. Been voicing this for some time now on public forums.
All the mistakes made just confirms my belief that common sense is not that common, scientist or not.

Sadly it seems the system will only recognise people will letters after their name.
Most are text book jockeys and any half smart bird breeder would know that our hobby is evolving
and advancing which is leaving most written references far behind.
It's a sad situation and I guess won't be the last disaster we will hear about.
