hi guys, ive got a few pairs of orange breasted finches and im wondering,do i make up the nests for them by filling with feathers and swamp grass etc and leave them in there, or do i leave empty nests in and put nesting material somewhere for them to make it from scratch? if the latter, what sort of thing can i put the materials in where it wont blow away?
thanks for your advice in advance

Orange breast make their own nests...you can use crab pot bait satchel for feathers or make up wire cylinder for same..

Some orange-breasts like cane baskets so maybe buy a few of those, and as suggested, build a wire cylinder and fill with brush and grass.
Here's a link of someone doing such.

My OBWs have built their own nest in a brush-filled vertical wire cylinder, have then taken over an abandoned Star's nest, and are presently holed up in a converted cutlery container. It seems that if they have clear eggs they like to start anew in another location.

Welcome to the forum. Hanging baskets full of grasses and feathers works, they just do their thing with it.

Just give them a nest and some nesting materials such as dried grass and let them do the work.
