Looking for your opinion what is best overall to breed in a colony say three to six pairs of the one species
or single pairs of different species that are suited.

Both are excellent options. It is individual taste. What do you like best? To choose a specific type and breed them up by putting 3/5 pairs in an avairy is good. Equally choose 3/6 compatible types and put a pair of each in, this is harder because of compatibility, but allows for more variety. Or the 3rd option, choose 2 compatible types and put 3 pair of each in. Weigh up what you think will give you the most satisfaction and go with it. Enjoy.

Single pairs in compatable mixed collections with other single pairs will almost always be more productive and you have total confidence of which pairs produced which young and precisely which pairs are producing at all. Poor performing pairs can easily be adjusted/managed for improved outcomes or replaced. If breeding outcomes and control of your birds is at all a priority, single pairs in mixed collections of other compatable single pairs is definitely the way to go.

I once had diamonds, gouldians, ruddies,red siskins, green singers and painteds in the one aviary.

Best breeding results ever and it was always nice to watch.

Maybe put 3 pr winter breeders with 3 pr summer breeders so you'll always have something to lookout for and look forward to.

Yes as a kid breeding finches years ago I did well with the mixed collection, now working with two or three pairs of two species not as good.
Thinking of moving back to a mixed collection, thank for feedback guys.
