Cock dark black . . Hen more of a brown/grey/black (if there is such a colour) . . in some birds this may be a bit variable, so it might be age related; or a poorly coloured cockbird/well coloured hen . . but definite black/definite 'not quite black' = very reliable
Not unlike sexing Saint Helenas . . Redbrows can also be done this way, in fact if you check out most finches upper AND under tail coverts differ a bit
With Y-R's you can also use the wide/narrow under beak
