I have one cock that always places swamp grass etc in the drinking water bowl. Is there a reason for this?

I have a painted that does this too. Perhaps they figure wetting the material will make it more malleable?

I have had that as well with crimsons but mainly feathers and in warm /hot weather. Maybe it is for humidifying the nest

Even my Zebs do this.

If he then picks them out then it's for humidity. If he just leaves the grass there he probably wants to make the bowl into a nest.

I don't think so Cathy. I think if they leave it in the water deliberately it is to change the taste especially if it is freshly changed. Mine pick up items like cuttle bone,shell grit and dead tea tree leaves and then turn around and poo in it and fly off.

our finches do this all the time

Canarys are generally the worst offenders, but like I said the Zebs will drop all sorts of vegetable matter in the water.
