Hi All,

I am very new to Zebra Finches and have just a got a two pairs.

But you have to start somewhere right!

I saw this guy at my local Pet Store and thought he looked pretty good, but like the pet store attendant they had no idea what variation he is. They said he was fawn.

Is he a charcoal fawn? is that even a thing?

Can someone please tell me what he is?

Cheers

He looks like he has the black face mutation, refer to the picture below and you will find some similarities. His colours are a bit lighter though. Can you give me a clearer picture?

Jake

Charcoal body , fawn wings , cfw or pied head
Not sure what’s atplsy there
Interesting and nice bird

I say charcoal body since no white on tail and black vent like a charcoal , charcoals also have black face

He is certainly a pretty boy. And a bit of a mix. Fawn yes, Charcol yes as his lower front half is dark. But the light chest has thrown me cause my carcol fawns don't have that.

Hi finchbreeder

I thought the light chest was affected by the very light head colour

I have fawn Charcols (only a small number so far) and they do not have this light chest. They have the fawn head and back, and the dark all the way from the neck to the tail on the front. I strongly believe that you are correct and there is a third mutation in there. (My fawn charcols also have a third mutation, but as it is recessive it does not show - red zeb)

I'd say it's a Black-bodied Slate.

The fact that it has such distinctive cheek patches indicates it isn't Charcoal. The fact that the darker markings are also very diluted but the chestnut markings aren't indicates this is a recessive dilute gene (Slate) rather than true Fawn.

Charcoals can have cheek patches

Reason I think the one you posted and the original
Photo is the lack of spots in the flanks

Lack of spots usually are charcoals and red breast
