hi i'm jim ,new , here , are i purchased a canary recently , i was told it was a young male , ive had the bird for 3 weeks , are at the moment he is only chattering , not singing , is this normal , meaning he hasn't reached maturity, & will continue to chatter , until he's matured then start singing , any help would be much appreciated, thanx jim

Welcome to the forum. The whistle of the male canary is the mating call. Mating season is generally in Spring, so most are out of breeding condition at this time of year. So you may have to wait a while to be sure. That said this insane weather we are having on the WA coast has mine on eggs in March. But my cockbird is not whistling.

thanx 4 ur imput , my main question is it normal for a young cock bird to chatter whilst learning to sing , i play fife music & canary songs & away he goes chattering etc , suppose it normal not sure , jim
