I can not understand why you need to be impatient and want to check nests there is always a risk. Is it worth it?
If you must check nests buy some Gouldians and have them lay in a nest box. After all the years of breeding finches
I still get the buzz when entering my aviaries and seeing young birds that have just fledged .
Zebra finches or the rarer types it's just the same.
To me poking fingers are a definite no no.

I agree with you E Orix
I love it when I walk into the aviary with only a slight suspicion that there is a nest, to then find fledglings lined up on the perch
I think with all these endoscopes and technology nowadays, it really takes away the surprise, because of all the monitoring of chicks being done
Each finch keeper has their own way one things for sure

Luckily now the BFPFs have made a new nest much, much lower (1m. off the ground) which they are currently incubating.

The best tip I have is to forget they have a nest, so you don't do anything unacceptable around them and they decide to do something bad
Forgetting nests are the best things you can do for your birds
