What do you think of this idea?

I've been thinking about different types of nests that I can use for my Gouldians that mimic hollow logs found in nature. I've been toying with the idea of cutting a length of PVC stormwater pipe and lining the inside with some of that fibre matting found in hanging pots. Then hanging it up really high for added privacy. Do you reckon they might like that?

Does anyone know in the wild if they like horizontal or vertical logs?

I wired up hanging baskets packed with straw last year...shoved a few holes in with a broom handle...the birds loved 'em.

Hi Cranberry
The use of pvc pipe has hit the big time...there were a number for sale at the last local bird sale here....for parrots too......Ive made a couple....biggest problem for me is that are just so dam ugly....in the sense they are not the least bit natural looking...but they are certainly functional and easy to clean. The other disadvantage is the relative cost over other types of nest boxes...especially if you use the end caps made for the pipe.....if you used wood for the ends its much cheaper......I cut the caps in half for one end to give the access...that cuts costs a bit. The easiest way to hang them is to cut a section of pipe about 38mm and then cut that through.....you can screw the back half to the aviary and the slip the pipe in....it acts as a clamp them.
Have fun :)

well my dad has made pvc pipe nets for his finches and they use them and both positions and oly put a bit of nesting material in the bottom. hes had masked finches, parrot finches, orange breasts and a few more to nest in them. then hes also made a few nests for the wild birds and has attached a natural wooden spout on. hes had 28s and galahs nesting in them and 1 nest has been occupied for the lasty 6 years. were planning on putting more up this year of natural and PVC pipe nests.
