Hello, just curious if our lack of summer this year and crazy weather has effected everyone's finch breeding? Particularly gouldians?

I can only speak for this side of the country by saying that the extended spring here has canarys still building nests.

Brisbane essentially had no spring. On the first day of spring, temperatures climbed to 34 degrees and stayed in the mid-30's for most of spring. We only got 15% of the average rain. Summer was even worse, with Brissie experiencing extremely dry, hot weather. Quite often it climbed to over 7 degrees above average in early summer, and usually stayed around 3-4 degrees above average. Thus, bird seed prices went through the roof from local growers and seeding grass was extremely rare.

And we only got the start of our "rainy season" (which usually starts early November) two weeks ago with a week and a half of non stop rain.

Australia has certainly thrown some weird weather our way this year, my gouldians have only just laid their first egg which is a hell of alot later for me... I just thought that perhaps the lack of our usual hot weather down here was a factor in that, or perhaps for other people too. Hope everyone is having or has had success and thank You to those that reply 👍

It is hot here, 40 today and much muggier this year than normal for our usually dry location. And most finches are showing little interest in breeding, including the Gouldians.

Probably a good idea for them if it's that hot and muggy.... poor buggers

It really is amazing though how tough our little finches are, hard to imagine life without them 🐤🐦🙂
