Just back into keeping birds

Hi, thanks for letting me join.

I live in Armidale and I have just finished building an aviary in my back yard. I am trying to keep a small variety of Finches. So far I have a few Gouldians and Zebras - I have the Zebras in quarantine as I have just purchased then recently..

I used to keep Budgies and Gouldians (separate aviaries) in Brisbane but it was a lot different than keeping them here in the New England.

Tonight is going to be about -3 and I am hoping I have done enough to keep my birds warm - there is no electricity to the aviary so it's more about retaining the days heat than producing heat during the night.

I'd be interested in anyones ideas about keeping birds in cooler climates.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian and welcome to the forum.

I've recently moved away from Armidale after being there for three years. I didn't keep birds whilst I was there so can only comment on what I saw at other aviaries.
A lot of keepers put plywood or fibro underneath their metal roofs to provide a bit of insulation and stop condensation forming.
A popular method of stopping cold draughts is to cover the open wire sections of your aviaries with clear builders plastic/polycarbonate sheeting during the colder months and removing it once it warms up.
If you get in contact with The Armidale Caged Bird Club I'm sure they could put you onto some local breeders so you can see what they've done with their aviaries.

Good luck!

As you have kept Gouldians before. You obviously know about appropriate facing of the avairy. But the draught proofing is something else. Drewys suggestions are good ones.
