Ringing birds, when, how, why.

Well, hi guys.
First time here.
Recently got myself two pair of African fire finches.
Currently settling in and no intentions of breeding too early.
But my question, to which I can't seem to find the answer on YouTube or Google (or at least not in a personalised explanation)
Closed ringing...
Split ringing.
When to do it (especially for birds not tolerable of inspections)
And at what point can you not closed ring a finch, (used to budgies being a cut off point of around 10 days old)
Cant seem to find identifiable (numbered) split rings only colour variations (options available please?)
I want to be able to have them rung as I intend on making a breeding setup from the 4 birds I have currently expanding into un related pairs and being able to identify good or bad genes or rearing issues within certain stock.
