HI. I am in the middle of a Gouldian colony breeding season (my first) and have so far fledged 8 chicks with 6 more (2 nests) to jump soon.

I had 7 pairs, but two cocks seem to have decided they are too old ( think Staedler and Waldorf) and I just today found a breeding cock bird dead.

My question is, should I replace the cock birds, or would this be too disruptive to the other pairs? Will the 3 females without partners pair up quickly with new cocks, or would the whole pair thing be thrown up for grabs again?

There are 16 possible nests for them to collectively use.

i would think its a bit late in the season to be replacing birds,id wait and get some good young birds after the moult,i was in Kuranda last week,great place,cheers gary

Agree, fresh mates next season.

I would wait for August to January for goildian chicks as you can get young birds at this time and saves the hassle of replacing again if the males are too old. I would also look at keeping some young you bred as well so you always have at least one young pair that you bred to keep the genetics of the original birds. I have done this myself with my birds I had a original pair of black headed goildians and now I have third generation offspring from the one pair.
