Sexing Green Singers

I have breed a few Green Singers for a couple of years now. I purchased a bird as a hen over a year now. I had the extra new bird in my large avairy with my breeding pair, no problems. The extra bird even fed young chicks. With my bad eye sight and fast flying birds the new bird always looked like a hen.
I had to reduce the bird numbers in the avairy. The hen singer was placed into my breeding/holding cage. After a while this bird was singing its head off. Also its colours have brightened up. I now think it is a male. Sorry, a bit long winded but do these birds supress their gender when they are in a avairy with dominate breeding singers. Do the males only sing?

Question 1 - no idea. Maybe he was a late maturer.
Question 2 - all cup nesters - the male only sings, but some hens do a small trill that can look similar. The sound is nothing like a full throated song but.
