Morning folks, I've done a bit of a search, but I dont seem to find answers to a question that I have, so I thought I wont be shy, Ill just jump in and ask.
Anyway, my male Jacarini is constantly chasing the female away from any where, I mean, really as soon as he sees her, he flies out from where ever he is hiding and chases her off. He still is in his off season colouration, but he is starting to do the calls that he does when it's good weather, I can't describe the call, but it sounds a little ssst sssst ssew eww, but really quick. Ok that doesn't describe it at all, but I gave it a shot!!

I dont know too much about these guys and am having trouble finding info. Can anyone lend a suggestion here. I guess i'm wondering if this is normal Jacarini behaviour (to chase the female off so constantly), or if it sounds like I have really non-compatible pair. I should mention that he also chases away some of the other birds, but not to the same extent as he does the hen. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

well, as usual, it appears that time has the answer. I was watching my Jacarini Male last friday chase everything in sight, including the hen and seriously contemplating what to do with him. The hen entered the main flight that Mr. Jacarini was busy defending and I watched him go to chase her, but this time something different. She just stood there and didn't fly off. So what did he do? Well he flew to the brush that I have hanging for them, called a call I haven't yet heard, to which she responded by flying over too as well. I few moments later, they were on the ground together collecting nesting material, to take back to the spot he had just shown her. I had the day off and got to watch hours of nest construction. Now several days later their is a very neat cup shaped nest, perfectly hidden in the brush at the back of the aviary and no more chasing the hen. They actually even nearly sit together! So fingers crossed that egg laying will commence soon.
