I'm no expert on the subspecies of king quails. I heard that the ones in Australian aviculture are of Chinese origin and aren't even Australian. Mine are from Luzon (Philippines) but from my memory they don't look any different to the ones I've seen in Australia. Can anyone tell me if they see any difference?

I must say that unlike my wild caught munias (Javan munia, Black headed nun, Spice finch and Java Sparrow) they have adapted well to aviary life and show little fear but after three months they still haven't even laid an egg and I thought they were like chickens.

Love these little buggers but sadly there hasnt been too many ive seen that havent been pecked around the head by other quails.
Recently saw at the pet shop finches pecking at a quails head , dont know much about them , they sure are cute .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Very cute.
Only difference I can see is the bird in the RHS pic seems rounder with darker feathering, but that could be just a variation as seen by the difference between the two birds in LHS pic or even lighting/camera settings.

Might be wrong cause I'm relying on memory instead of looking it up in my books.
But I think you will find that Australia or Philipines they all originated in China.
Only differences I am aware of are colour shading and mutations.

they would be the same greg as all the others have said about mutations being the only differance with the colour . give them time i have had many over the years and some breed quiet freely and others take there time even thou they can breed all year round. kik most birds some will breed out in the open and other need to hide , give them a few hiding places and see what happens ...pete

I thought I'd look for some web resources that may describe the 10 sub-species but as yet I haven't found pictures or descriptions. I did come across the article expounding the theory that the ones in Australian Aviculture come from China (http://www.bcsa.com.au/Articles/quail.htm). I have found some interesting mutations that I've never come across in Australia. Have a look at http://www.chinesepaintedquail.co.uk/qu ... tures.html

Do King Quails mix with finche's on the ground when feeding ? Are they to
shy to eat with them or would they attack them ?

Have had King quail for a good 20yrs and no problems with the finches. In fact my mother quails will adopt any fledgling finches on the floor and cover them with their wings overnight. Can't say that this will happen with all quail, as personalitys vary.
And the cocks are ferosious little guys who will go a mouse that intrudes when they have chicks. Again that may just be the personality of my stock, who are line-bred, after obtaining a hen who was pied about 10 years ago and trying to draw that gene out.
A warning to budgie breeders, young budgies think that young quail are toys and will play with them resulting in the death of the quail. :( My mother no longer keeps anything but spare adult quail in her budgie aviary. :o

Thanks for the information Finchbreeder. I'm thinking about getting a pair. For
my finch aviary. I had them alone time ago when i was a kid. But could never
get them to breed. What kind of nesting material would i need ?

Mine are on dirt floors with just some of the seeding grass the finches have finished with left behind for the quail to use.
Poor things are not over catered for, but they seem to do fine like this.
I also always leave a section of the aviary floor covered with husks where the workms can breed, and the quail can scratch round and find live food.
